"haha, terrific."

with his hearty laugh, smiling eyes behind all the wrinkles, "haha, terrific" is the favorite expression of our beloved abuelito, fr. rudy malasmas, sj. that is how we will forever remember our dear abuelito. truly, truly a "man for others". the happiest and most loving lolo one could ever have.

he suffered a heart attack early morning of july 3, and remained in a coma until he peacefully passed away on the evening of july 11.

i would like to take this chance to thank the whole ateneo community, and the whole davao community, for your overwhelming love and support for our abuelito. i attended his wake last july 12, in the chapel of the ateneo de davao campus, and i could not believe the stories i heard of how much people loved him, and the outpouring of sympathy of family, friends, and even strangers. even through my twitter account, so, so, so many people messaged me about how fr. rudy touched their lives, and it still brings me to tears when i think about the touching messages. i am honestly crying as i write this post.

a bit of trivia about my abuelito..

he was always known for his text jokes..

yes, he loves sending text jokes. some are forwarded jokes, but most are originals. my favorite "prank" ever was when my godson roco was born. i received a text from abuelito saying "bianca, roco looks like you." i was thrilled! being the proud ninang that i am, i always bragged about how i think roco looks like me. that day at lunch, my sister told me that abuelito texted her that morning. "ais, roco looks like you." my mom then says, i got that text too! "ofel, roco looks like you." oh, abuelito! texted all of us to make us kilig, but he texted everyone the same message pala! hay naku, so cute.

he officiated all the weddings in the family..

all my older cousins, my older brother.. abuelito was the officiating priest in all the weddings of the cousins. he always gave such a heartfelt, witty sermon precisely because he knew all of us growing up, and he always made it a point to meet and get to know our significant others. ever since i was younger, i was so sure that when the day comes that i would get married, that abuelito would be our priest.. it makes me very, very emotional knowing that won't happen anymore.. :(

he was sort of my number one fan..

oh, abuelito i miss you.. :( his random texts.. that he got to catch a glimpse of me.. how proud he is when he sees me in magazines or newspapers.. how he shares with his friends my simple accomplishments.. imagine, random people come up to me or leave me a message saying, "fr. rudy is your lolo? he always brags that he's your lolo." oh, abuelito.. :( if you only knew how proud i am that i am your grand niece. :(

dearest abuelito,
you are already terribly missed..
please watch over all of us from up there in heaven.
i love you!!!!

This is a very touching tribute. He will be at your wedding naman, just not how you pictured it would be. I lost my grandmother five years ago, and until now, I feel pained that my future kids will not know her hugs and kisses... sheesh, I'm getting emotional :(

We are blessed to have known them, and to have been loved by them. Pay tribute to your abuelito by continuing to be the Bianca he was proud of. :)

wow. I have fond memories of Fr. Malasmas. He was the headmaster in ADDU when I was still in gradeschool. His office door is always open for the little kids who want to have their stuff blessed from rosaries to prayer books to pencils. My condolences.

hi bianca .. this is sort of a late reaction but nevertheless, i would like to extend my heartfelt condolence to you and your family. I'm from the Ateneo de Davao Community, formerly a student and now a part time teacher, and I have attended mass where Fr. Rudy is the one officiating. It was very sad indeed when he passed away .. he will surely be terribly missed .. - jazzie
