26 September 2007

it has always been one of my great dreams to make a difference.

"i don't know why i think i can make any kind of difference. all i know is that i want to."

i wish these words were written by me, but they're not. these are the words of angelina jolie, as written in a journal she kept on some of her first few travels as a un goodwill ambassador for the unhcr - united nations high commissioner on refugees.

these lines i'm sure echo the sentiments of many other people in the world, myself included.. in a major way. (hehe, seriously!)

i reeeally don't read books! its sort of my frustration! i admire people who have favorite authors (meaning they've read enough of a lot of authors to actually have a favorite.) and those who are so in-the-know with all the great works. i'm the type who really wants to read, but after a few pages, i get sleepy!! (ack! how sad!) but recently, i did get to finish a book.. 'notes from my travels' by angelina jolie. yes, she has a book.

its both intensely inspiring and extremely depressing. it opens up your eyes to the many, many injustices around the world, but also lifts your spirits with stories of the unbelievable strength of these people. for those who are thinking of studying humanitarian aid, something i plan to hopefully study in the future too (sabay tayo ben ha!), this will probably be a good book to read.

i was just so moved by what i read, so allow me to share a few lines that struck me most in the course of my reading the book..

"i honestly want to help. i don't believe i am different from other people. i think we all want justice and equality. we all want a chance for a life with meaning. all of us would like to believe that if we were in a bad situation someone would help us."

"i don't understand why some things are talked about and others are not."

"i wasn't sure i should go - i'm still not sure, but - and i know this may sound false to some - i thought of the people who have no choice."

"what i am reminding myself is that these problems do not disappear just because we do not hear about them. and in that thought - there is so much more happening around the world than what is communicated to us about the top stories we do hear."

"i told one of the workers how i admired him for being able to work there everyday, all day long. he said, 'yes, it is hard work, but it is for the children, so it feels good.'"

"when they say, 'each person can make a difference,' i believe that is true."

"could you imagine if that was our everyday life? could you imagine acknowledging every individual you pass and smiling at one another? showing respect to everyone?"

"the imbalance of funding in the world makes no sense to me."

"and yet with all of these complaints, i have never felt so good in my life. i am so tremendously honored to be with these people. i realize more everyday how fortunate i have been in my life. i hope i never forget and never complain again about anything. but damn - my feet are itchy."

"earlier this morning i was complaining about my feet being itchy. this afternoon i met a man who lost his leg. he greeted me with a smile and was joking with his doctor. he found the energy to be a gracious host to us visitors."

"there are so many cambodians over a certain age who will remember everything. i don't know how they live on. but they do, with so much strength of will and power and spirit. they are an example to us all."

"it is a shame how, for a time, i can so easily shut out the world's problems when i am safe at home."

"they understand something about life that many of us (thank GoD) never will, and they focus on many things we have forgotten. they know what to be grateful for. they appreciate the importance of family and community. they understand the power of faith and love."

"this message is written on the board: 'if we all do a little, we can do a lot.'"

"i think this is the hardest thing to see, to listen to them with their bruises, dirty torn clothes, cut fingers, as they smile at you. they are children. they still dream. they seem so full of hope, it breaks your heart."

"the mind wants to forget because it hurts and weighs so much on the heart and soul."

"i've stopped writing for the last few minutes. he was trying not to cry. william told him it was okay. he can talk only about what he wants. the man apologizes. can you imagine? someone apologizing because they can't tell you how their family was killed."

i hope what i shared touched you as much as it touched me..

hey bianca,
thanks for posting the quotes. and sharing a part of the book. prolly, it's a great read.

i wanted to pass the quotes along. i guess, hollywood money can make a difference.

and it's good to know that when one is given a name/ wealth in great heights, one can make a good use out of it.

you take care. you're such a sweetie.

God bless.

difference has always been the matter of change. and change is the only constant thing in this world.

the thing that angelina does is a noble one. i applause her for that. making a difference... gee. when just last year, i've promised to do sensible things for one day, makaisa lang ako masaya na ako. but as days progress, i've found the drive to do more. i would like to believe that is a difference that i've made. and hopefully, when i get really old, i've done enough to change this world.
its never too late for a change.

hi Bianca. I've been a fan of your blog for sometime now. And i admire you for being the person that you are. You are able to express your feelings through writing(what a blessing!), which i think i couldn't, and its just amazing to know how much you care not only about yourself, but more so about your dear family and the world around you. I've always hoped to make a difference in other people's lives but still struggling on HOW i can actually do it..and yet your words has now encouraged me more than ever to pursue that dream. Thank you! hopefully someday i can get back with you with a story of my own.

You should read more books, you know. You should at least try finishing a book no matter how difficult it may be. It's a discipline. Knowing how articulate you are, you won't have any problems. :)

hi! there are a lot of pinoy who had the same experience like angelina's. i worked w/ an NGO in Angola. I've seen d same in the capital and during food distribution in the provinces. It's so sad. I dare not step on a rough road for fear of landmines.Kahit na yung road na dinadaanan na lagi ng mga tao...bigla na lng puputok. Nagka malaria na rin ako dun. Nakakaloka ang situation dun. That was an experience that i'll never forget. I rode the small UN planes...Haayyy....i hope i made a difference...in my own small way...

maybe we just have to reflect. we see the problems of the world but we fail to act and solve the problems. it's good that there are still people ready to do anything/everything to make a positive difference.

it's always great to start the habit of reading! one way to do it is to check reviews online, it saves time in the bookstores, and you get ideas about what to look for. since you like to travel so much, check out peter mayle. he really immerses you in the local flavors, it's like a travel book and fiction combined. and if you're too busy, there are really a lot of amazing young fiction writers, like philip pullman who did golden compass, the movie that's slated for december, it's extremely well written. read read read lang! - http://bluelawbyanna.blogspot.com/search/label/Book%20Review

hahaha! te biancz, cambodia next trip mo, let's go out and save the world! yey!

brangelina.. beautiful couple inside out! yey! ~clap!clap!clap!

Well, I would like to think
The world hasn't seen
That all the best is still to come,
And I know life ain't easy.

I pass them sleeping on the streets
Their bloodstained hands and dirty feet
And I can't ignore them
Any more then I already have

So we laugh, and we smile
and we play our games of sweet denial
If we hold, all our breath
If we kneel right down and just repent
You can't tell me we're forgiven

Start with me
I cannot lie
When my heart doesn't follow my eyes
Turn away from all the suffering
That surrounds
Our time on this earth
For some their life has been a curse
I say I'm sorry and I should change
You know it just could be me someday

There's no way out of here
I don't want to die, and leave it all behind
Each day part of me disappears
But who am I to judge, what's been sent from above

We can't laugh
We can't smile
When so much just ain't right
It can't go on forever...
If we hold, our breath
If we kneel down and repent
You can't tell me we're forgiven, no,
You can't tell me we're forgiven

Dear bianca,
"i don't believe i am different from other people." -jolie
Usually, people misunderstand the equality in each person. Madalas nagkakarun ng di pagkakaunwaan dahil sa mga naiisip ng karamihan na ganito si ganyan, ganyan si ganito. I have an experience where people choose not to talk to me, they say that I'm different, they say I'm level headed. pero sa katunayan, lahat naman tayo pare-pareho. pare parehong may kailangan, pare parehong may mga pangarap sa buhay, pare parehong may kagustuhan, pare pareho lang talaga tayo kung ating papansinin. Its really amazing how people like angelina, like bianca, like the wonderful people in this world manage to make a difference. When we all do a little, we can do so much. Bianca, thank you for inspiring us. thank you for reminding us every little thing a person needs to put in his mind all the time at any place. thank you for posting your thoughts and inspiring us, thank you for keeping your blog, thank you for your care and concerns for the less fortunate and the great kids. YOur beautiful inside and out. I'm just one of your readers here on your blog. I used to silently read your blog and shyly leave a comment. Its amazing how i can bring to you my message through this comment box. thank you for allowing us to leave comments. I will never miss any of your entries.

Hi Ms. Bianca,

I am truly inspired in what i read in your blog.. It made me realize that if only everyone can make even 1% of what angelina did then maybe this world is much a better place to live in.

We can always make a difference in our everyday lives by touching anyone in need in any way. We need not be a hollywood superstar like angelina jolie to be able to help those who are in need. All we have to do is make a difference.. An example of this is your blog. You open many people's eyes by posting quotes and stories that are so inspiring. Thanks Ms. Bianca for touching my life, our lives. For inspiring us... For making a difference.. God bless you!!! Continue touching our lives with your blogs!!! More Power! -andrea-

Continue inspiring other people and may God continue to bless you with wisdom and grace!

Hey bi!

I was checking my yahoo mail and i saw a photo on a yahoo ad.. I thought it looked like you, but i wasn't so sure, then after a while your name came out! haha! Big time ka na talaga ;p

Anyway, about the next entry, I believe that deep inside, everyone has a little bit of that humanitarian spirit in them. I myself have always dreamed of saving the world - kaya lang, I have no idea where to begin! People like Angelina (and you, of course ;), who use their world-wide popularity for the good of others other than themselves are truly an inspiration :)

I hope one day we can make a big enough difference to make THAT change in the world we live in! After all, all it takes in that one RIGHT step towards that ONE great path and soon enough, others will follow!

Where can I get Angelina's book? I want to read it!!

Love, Cheska

Hi Bianca,

I chanced upon your blog as I was searching for "philosophy majors" as I happen to be one. Product of the SVD seminary in Tagaytay and working as a software engineer now in San Francisco. I noticed that you frequent the area as your brother lives and hosts a show on TFC. I like how you host TFC connect. I think you are as natural and spontaneous as anyone can get. TV stations here in the Bay Area have a lot of Asian newscasters due to the area's diversity (exotic daw). Why don't you try your luck and hit it big in the US. Just an idea you might want to pursue in the future. Take care.

i want to make a difference too. im pretty sure you've heard the help 100 project brave kids commercial on the radio. my heart breaks everytime i hear that commercial. i started selling shirts with the project bk logo on it and the proceeds will go to the org. its not much but its definitely something. i plan on sticking with the shirt thing and im hoping to donate to other charities as well but it's gonna take a while since im using my allowance to print out the shirts. haha! im just really lucky i have friends who support me and buy the shirts. hehehe. =)

check out the shirtsforacause in multiply. i have yet to put up pics though. hehe. =)

we can all make a difference. doesnt necessarily have to end world hunger or anything on a global scale... but its a start and for sure it will make a difference in someone else's life. =) thats what really matters i think.

you take care bianca and continue to inspire more people. =)

Hi Bianca, I too believe that if people will all pitch in to make this a better world then we can all make it possible.
I am no Mother Theresa, but as u mentioned on ur blog, I too would like to have the priviledge of helping less fortunate people someday. N we can all do it in our little ways. I am a filipina base in Canada and we are part of the program support a child, n I actually requested for a filipino (syempre makabayan pa rin ako) and they sent a picture of this little boy that we are going to support hopefully till he is in College. I displayed it in our house so my daughters will realize that there is a world out there less fortunate that the one they are in.

Just thought I'd share my 2 cents.

Thanks and more power to you!

hello bianca! :) i was wondering on how i can read back on your old posts, i finally found the left side links and picked on a random date, must be lucky 'cause this was a nice post i've stumbled upon. i was also a volunteer for unicef back in college and just like angelina, "i don't know why i think i can make any kind of difference. all i know is that i want to," sadly i was not able to spend much time with the org but i've attended one of unicef's event back in ust few years back, i think you're there as a guest, right before ustv awards. you were just starting with the help kids learn project then, i guess.

all i want to say is that, thanks for being an inspiration! :) and keep on inspiring people!

will continue to read your posts next time, keep it up! :)

p.s. nice quotes, a shame not to be shared, sad thing is, how come right click is disabled??? will buy the book instead. haha!
